Pain Relief Options During Childbirth
Are you contemplating your pain relief options during childbirth? At Reedsburg Area Medical Center, we believe that every mother should have a choice and control over their pain management during labor. We proudly offer a comprehensive range of pain relief alternatives supported by cutting-edge technology and the most recent medical practices. Allow us to guide you through our options.
Leading the Way in Epidural Anesthesia
More than two decades ago, we became the pioneering hospital in the area to offer comprehensive labor analgesia programs. This groundbreaking initiative incorporated spinal narcotics for labor, epidural analgesia for pain control during labor, and a combined spinal epidural for labor pain management.
When choosing epidural analgesia, your movement may be limited, but still, numerous positions can be comfortably adopted while in bed. A consistent flow of anesthesia medication guarantees your comfort throughout the labor. And should there be any breakthrough discomfort, you can self-administer an additional dose of anesthesia medication. With our highly skilled nurse anesthetists readily available round the clock, you can rest assured that your anesthesia needs will be met promptly.
Experience the Ease of Nitrous Oxide
We stand proud as one of the first rural hospital in the area to introduce nitrous oxide as a laboring relief option. This 50/50 mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen can be inhaled through a mask held by the mother herself. This option lets you experience the sensation of a contraction without intense discomfort – making you feel like, “Of course, it’s a contraction, but it doesn’t bother me.”
A significant advantage of nitrous oxide is the freedom it accords to you during labor. You can move out of bed and even labor in water. Continuous fetal monitoring is not compulsory with this option, and sometimes, nitrous oxide is utilized as an intermediate step until the right time for an epidural comes.
The Advantages of IV Pain Medications
For those seeking to temper the sharp edges of labor pain, Intravenous (IV) pain medications can offer the perfect solution. Your options include morphine, stadol, nubain, and fentanyl – medications that have proven track records in managing labor pain.
Each of these pain relief options acts differently for everyone, depending on their stage of labor. They are carefully administered to provide you with the much-needed respite from intense labor discomfort while keeping you alert and engaged during the birth of your child.
